A Life Coach can be an invaluable resource and the key to you gaining clarity and achieving your goals. Its true a good life coach cannot and should not tell you what to do, how to do it or answer any of the tough questions for you, it all needs to come from you! . The power of a life coach lies in their questioning techniques, knowing what questions to ask and when and pushing you to dig deep for an honest answer. You are the only person that has the answers to your success and happiness.

Sustainable change and success can only be achieved by you and you alone. So the question arises, can you be your own life coach? Can you coach yourself to successfully achieving your goals? The answer to both those questions is yes, but can you achieve as much as you would if you had engaged with a Life Coach? I think it depends on you and how you work best.

If you are going to successfully coach yourself then there are 5 non-negotiable things that need to happen.

Time Out to Think

If you are going to coach yourself then you need to take the time out to focus on it. If you were going to see a life coach you would have an hour every week or two weeks to discuss you and your goals, you need to build this same time into you schedule. You need time to focus on you, what you want, allow yourself time to ask yourself questions and most importantly to reflect on them.

Self-Awareness and Honesty

You need to work on your self-awareness and be 100% honest with yourself. Sometimes we find ourselves delving headlong into goals, killing ourselves into achieving something because it is what we think we should do, but actually if we are honest, we don’t want to do it. You need to strip it all back and really ask yourself what you want, what will serve you best, what will bring you joy.

Self-Belief

You need to believe in yourself and tackle any self-doubt or limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Draw on your strengths, tackle your weaknesses and support yourself like you would support your best friend, daughter, or niece.

Accountability

Hold yourself accountable. If you say you will do something find a way to make sure you do it. It usually helps to tell someone, but if you want to keep it to yourself than that’s ok, write it down, create a reward system, figure out what works for you, but you need to have accountability for your actions or inactions.

A plan or Self Coaching Model to Work By.

A self-coaching Model will keep you on track, apply consistency, ensure you are asking yourself the right questions and help you build an action plan to reach your goals. It will also allow you track your progress and see how far you have come. There are loads of coaching models out there, I work with my own coaching model CAAMP (Change, Assess, Action, Mindset, Progress) which can also be used successfully to self-coach.

If you want to make a positive change in your life I highly recommend you to explore coaching whether you hire a life coach or you decide to self coach, I guarantee you will be better off and more successful.
