The Self Coaching Model: CAAMP

There are lots of great coaching models, such as GROW (Goals, Reality, Options, Wrap-up) developed by Sir John Whitmore in the 80’s. GROW is a great framework for setting goals and improving performance.

I've used GROW and other coaching and goal setting models both professionally and personally, however what I think they fail to specifically address is mindset. Setting out what you want to achieve and building a plan at the start is typically the easy part, but even the best laid plans can fail if your mindset is not right.

I developed the CAAMP Model to incorporate mindset and ensure you achieve your goal quicker and with greater success. I use this Model on clients, but it is also particularly good for self coaching, it encourages you to look at your mindset from the start and throughout the process and keep you motivated on the journey.

Change – What do I want to change?

Assess – Current situation? End Point? Timeline? Measurements?

Action – How will I achieve the change? Milestones?

Mindset – How committed am I? How will I maintain my motivation and self-belief?

Progress – Tracking my progress. Reviewing plans for changes.

Although 4th on the list, Mindset is important throughout all steps. For example, during the Change phase it is important to reflect and understand what you truly want and why you want it. How will you benefit from this change and does it align with your values? Understanding these questions will help you create a vision and keep you pushing towards it.

During the Assess phase, while you are looking at how you will achieve your goal, 2 resources you must have are self-belief and determination; both can be achieved and maintained with a growth mindset. During the Progress phase mindset will again come into play, for example if there are set backs or failures how will you learn from them and move forward. In one of the episodes of Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett, he was talking to Karren Brady and she said when she hears “No” she always thinks “find another way”.

The Model however gives over a full phase for Mindset in order to look deeper at the things that might be holding you back and the things that can propel you forwards. The mindset phase will also help you address and overcome the obstacles and help you build and maintain the right mindset for you to excel at your goals.
